Drug Description of Metadate CD
Metadate CD being one of the most commonly known, is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant of the phenethylamine and piperidine classes that is used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and narcolepsy. It belongs to a class of drugs called Stimulants, ADHD Agents. It may be taken by mouth or applied to the skin, and different formulations have varying durations of effect.
This medication is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain. Metadate CD can help increase your ability to pay attention, stay focused on an activity, and control behavior problems. It may also help you to organize your tasks and improve listening skills.
This medication is also used to treat a certain sleep disorder (narcolepsy).
Dosage and Administration
Metadate CD is administered once daily in the morning, before breakfast.
It may be swallowed whole with the aid of liquids, or alternatively, the capsule may be opened and the capsule contents sprinkled onto a small amount (tablespoon) of applesauce and given immediately, and not stored for future use. Drinking some fluids, e.g. water, should follow the intake of the sprinkles with applesauce. The capsules and the capsule contents must not be crushed or chewed. Patients should be advised to avoid alcohol while taking Metadate CD.
Dosage should be individualized according to the needs and responses of the patient.
The recommended starting dose for this medication is 20 mg once daily. Dosage may be adjusted in weekly 10-20 mg increments to a maximum of 60 mg/day taken once daily in the morning, depending upon tolerability and degree of efficacy observed. Daily dosage above 60 mg is not recommended.
Side Effects of Use
Common side effects include difficulty sleeping, decreased appetite, anxiety, and weight loss. More serious side effects may include psychosis, allergic reactions, prolonged erections, substance abuse, and heart problems.
